More about this scene

We are at the foot of the Downs by the route of the London to Brighton main line railway. St John the Baptist's church has a wooden bell turret, and the interior is decorated with a series of 12th- century wall paintings. A railway tunnel near the village has an ornate northern entrance. Two windmills, Jack and Jill, are located on the top of the Downs overlooking the village far below. The black smock mill Jack is conserved, while the white post mill Jill is in full working order and open to visitors.
