It was here, two miles from Ironbridge, that the industrial revolution began. Abraham Darby bought a furnace in 1706 and began experimenting with ways of smelting iron by using coke rather than charcoal In 1709 he mastered the technique and changed the world. It was his grandson, Abraham Darby III, who later built the famous bridge.
