Midway between Coleford and Cinderford, the Speech House was built in 1676 as the Court of Verderers and Freeminers - the place where legal grievances relating specifically to the laws and customs of the Forest of Dean were aired. It was also the centre for administration of Forest business. The impressive building is now a hotel, but the ancient court room with its oak dais is preserved, and the Forest Verderers still sit there when transacting their affairs.

Chas Kay was my Great Grandfather and he owned the Grocers store in Coleford for several years.
This photograph brings back many memories of the Coleford of my childhood. The area round the Town Clock has changed a few times over the years mainly to accomodate the increase in traffic. The building on the far side of the clock in the High Street was a huge ironmongers called Terrett Taylor & Co. It was owned in the 1950s by Mr H. J.
