More about this scene

This view from the church crossroads looks along Smugglers Lane towards the post office crossroads. The woman is the widow Ann Parfitt, better known as Granny Bloomer, who died in 1920, aged 96, by which time she had 116 living descendants! She lived in nearby Merrifield and always carried a long forked stick, which she used to whack naughty children. Her favourite food was bread and butter thickly spread with mustard. Sitting beside her are two of her great-grandchildren, Joe and Kitty Cobb. In the background are Elsie Osman and Rose Morton.
