Sir William More, advisor to Elizabeth I and related to Sir Thomas More, built this Elizabethan mansion in 1568 for the then princely sum of £1,640 19s 6d. Some of the stone came from Waverley Abbey, a victim of the Dissolution of the Monasteries.
