Set at the mouth of the River Conway, or Conwy, this mediaeval walled town with its famous castle, one of Edward I's 'iron ring' around Wales, is still remarkably self-contained. The new A55 road tunnel beneath the river diverts through-traffic from its streets. The quay is busy today with pleasure craft, rather than the commercial traffic of the past. This early photograph shows Conway Castle and Telford's graceful suspension bridge of 1826, with Stephenson's tubular railway bridge of 1848 just behind it. Today the road bridge of 1958 blocks the view of the earlier bridges.

Welsh Gem
I love this town so much as I spent my childhood here and they were very happy times. We had to move away for work reasons but I would move back tomorrow if I could. I visit every year for my trip down memory lane and it's a great relief that Conwy hasn't changed too much. What can I say about the Castle, Plas Mawr, Marine Walk, Abercrombie House and St Mary's church with the We Are Seven memorial. Yes, it's a World ...see more

I have visited Conwy each year for the last several years.On my last visit I parked my car in a small car park at Penmaenmawr and walked to Conwy,I took some photographs of Conwy castle in the distance, from the photo you are able to see the medieval town walls that you are able to walk as it's an open site.You also have a view of Thomas Telford's Suspension Bridge built in 1826. My maternal grandparents ran Hooson's Cafe on Bangor Road, Conwy, very close to the city walls. My brother and I were put in boarding school near them - at Llandudno and Penmaenmawr - whilst our parents were overseas, so we could be near them for school holidays. The Boats In This Photo
I think the motor yacht in the centre of this photo [outer row, single mast with 3 visible portholes on the starboard side] is the White Aster II which belonged to my grandfather Walter Robinson Handforth. The same vessel appears in the Marine drive photo taken in "c.1955". White Aster was sold by my family in 1954. Chris Handforth

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
