More about this scene
This much fought-over castle dominates the skyline of the Isle of Purbeck. The Saxon King Edward was murdered here in 978. King Stephen failed to capture the stronghold in 1139, and the fortress was held by the forces of Simon de Montfort during his conflict with Henry III. In the Civil War it was defended by the indomitable Lady Bankes, who held out for six weeks, to the annoyance of the besieging Parliamentary troops. The castle was 'slighted' soon afterwards to reduce its strategic importance.
