More about this scene
The fine setting of the town church is shown in this picturesque view through the gateway. The Methuen Chapel on the north side was added in 1874- 78 when the chancel was restored by C F Hansom. Nearby is Corsham Court, a large manor house built in Elizabethan style. Thomas Smythe of London, haberdasher and Collector of the Customs, erected it in 1582. The house passed through the hands of the Hungerfords and Thynnes (Lord Bath) and then the Methuens. Other famous names associated with Corsham and its fine collection of good houses include designers John Nash, Henry Keene, Capability Brown and Bellamy.
