Bathing is possible along some of the beaches at Cowes, particularly at Gurnard Bay. However, the currents are strong and the shoreline shelves steeply. Cowes' reputation as a yachting paradise overwhelmed all real attempts to open the town up as a simple holiday resort.

My father Mr Jim Rush is at the far right of this photo in a light shirt, looking rather windswept. At this time he was the proprietor of the Pavilion Hotel and also for a short time the owner of the Alexander Hall which he ran as a dance hall.
