Although it was undoubtedly the railways that first brought heavy industry to the region (indeed, they were for a long time the major employers in the town), it was not long before other industries associated with engines and heavy machinery followed. The most famous of these was Rolls Royce, shown here, whose Aero Engine factory was established in 1938.

I worked in Rolls-Royce installing the air conditioning unit, taking the car out on the road to test the system worked correctly. I worked with Maurice Ashwin, my foreman was Jack Gadd. The senior bosses were always known by their initials, Mr Fox was F X and Mr Dodd was D D.
