Ellis Street, Crewe
A Memory of Crewe.
Although I was born in Nantwich (1956), in the Barony hospital, I grew up in Crewe until the age of about twelve. We lived in Ellis Street, which then, if memory serves me right, only had three houses, even though we were in number 8! Most of the street (on our side) was taken up with a high brick wall with broken glass on top. The road was not paved, but I think there was one streetlight between the house and the corner with Ford Lane. I used to run to and from its 'safety' on the way home from cubs. Across the road was all fields and you could see right across town, they started building just before we moved.
I went to the nursey school by St Michaels, Broad Street infants and junior and then started my first year in Ludford Street. Like others on here, I remember walking to North Street (church?) once a week, the old railway carriage was at the back, but I don't think we used it. One week there was a funeral and one of my uncles was a pallbearer. That caused a bit of excitement for us kids. Anyone remember the name of the teacher here, during the 1960's?
Did I really walk to and from North Street alone, it could not happen these days. Memories of steam trains passing under 'Mucky' bridge, is that right?
Great to look back and read others shared memories.
