We are looking towards the junction of High Row, Houndgate, Blackwellgate and Skinnergate. The street is dominated by the Italianate clock tower, paid for by Joseph Pease; along with the Town Hall and covered market, it was designed by Alfred Waterhouse and built in 1864. In this picture we also see the slope where the fat cattle market used to be held.

High Row Toilets

My uncle Maurice Walker installed the pipework for the urinals. He was working for Darlington Borough Council at the time. The urinals were huge, and the pipework was always shiny.

High Row Toilets

yes High Row did have gents toilets .two sets of steep steps leading down to wash and brush ups by a toilet attendant also I remember a gents barber had a kiosk down there due to council cutbacks everything now closed and bricked up .Can any one remember a character called Geordy Fawbutt who had stall next to the covered market steps selling winkle's whelks and mussels on small dishes he used to live in Valley ...see more
