St. Mary's Rc Grammar School,Humersknott

A Memory of Darlington.

I was born in Darlington in 1952, and lived with parents Jim & Margaret Logan, and my two elder brothers; Peter and Paul. We lived at 46 Fife Road and all attended St. Augustines RC Primary School, Larchfield Street, and then after the Scholarship, up to St. Mary's. My old form master was Mr White and the Headmaster was Father McKenna. The only boys I can remember from my class of 1961 were Christopher Concannon, a boy called Conroy (his nickname was Oggy) and a boy with surname Luke. I visited the school back in the summer of 1989, and talked with the then Headmaster, Dick Whiteside, his sister taught me at St.Augustines! I have tried to access information about St.Marys but to no avail - can anybody help. The family left Darlington in 1962, for East Kent, and both my parents are now deceased. My brothers live in differtent UK locations, and I for my sins live in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. I would love to hear from anyone who remembers the Logan Family ,St Augustines and St. Marys.

Hi Joe, I attended St Mary's from September 1962 and was in same class. Mr White was our form teacher as well as taking us for music and we had a couple of Jesuit teachers. I remember Chris Concannon as I played football with him, he had very dark red hair. I also remember I think John Luke, who was known as Luke 'Warm'. I had moved up to St Mary's from St Teresa's with Terry Mullett, who was in the class as well and we were keen footballers. I lived with my parents at the RAF base at Middleton St George and had to travel in to the bus station at Feethams in those days and then get another bus up to St Mary's. I will always remember the long drive you had to walk up to get to the school buildings and run back down to catch the bus at 4pm. Another abiding memory is school diners - queing in all weathers unless you were on first sitting. Character building. Best regards - Joe

My name is Jim Atkinson and funnily enough today is my birthday. I was the year above Terry Mullet at school but played football in the same school teams. My kid brother Phil was the year behind you at school you may remember him. He was in the same class as Martin Malloy and Harry Dunn. Mr Concannon was in the same team as me but I couldn't remember his first name. I wonder if that is the Chris you are on about. Our Phil has just started a Facebook page for the old school so you could probably catch up with some old mates on there. I landed on this site because I was looking for photographs of the old school. I am actually still a student at the school. I go to a woodwork class there on a Monday evening and have been for about eight years now. I don't remember you Kieren or Joe but the memories are precious to us all, well at least those of us who enjoyed the school. My two older brothers Ted and Reg went there as well but sadly their memories don't follow the same path as mine. Jim

Hi Joe. I attended St Augustines from about 1948 to 1953 then went to Beechwood and left in 1959. One of our teachers at Beechwood was Vincent Logan. He was a lovely man who taught English RE and gardening. He was also a rear gunner during the war and would go off on a tangent mid lesson with war stories. I may be wrong but I think think the headmaster at that time was also a Logan. In our class at Beechwood was a boy called Brian Robson or Robinson who went on to be a lab technician at St Mary’s. If you go on Facebook there is a group dedicated to St Mary Grammar School with photos of Larchfield St school etc. Best wishes and good luck in your search. Mike
