Dawley and Wellington were rivals to control Shropshire's new town. People here wanted to call it Dawley New Town. Those in Wellington (not to mention all the smaller towns and villages) refused point blank. Finally a compromise was reached - it was named Telford after the Scottish engineer, Thomas Telford, who did so much work locally.
