More about this scene
Writing in 1822, Edward Baines said of the area that 'on the whole, Saddleworth is an interesting, though an uninviting part of the country, and the Mountaineers of this region, like those of Switzerland, have a character peculiar to themselves: they are rude of speech, but kind and hospitable in disposition, without many benefits of education, but quick of perception and sound judgement'.
