Deniably Main

A Memory of Denaby Main.

My dad was manager at Deniably Main in the early 1960s; he'd started work at 14 and come from a very poor background, so to move into the big house on Station Road was quite something for him. As a child I would go round the pit yard on a Saturday morning with my dad. The best part for me was riding on the odd locomotive or spending time with Bill Bisby, the horseman who tended to all the pit ponies. He would always try to keep his best ones on the surface as all the pits then had local shows annually which included showing horses. He told me that the blokes had a card school going on in the railway sheds and half the pit would go off sick on ledger week! Also, everybody had a green allotment shed - NBC green!
