More about this scene
St Mary's is the original town church. It dates from the same era as St John's, thanks to Bishop Roger of Salisbury, who was a liberal churchman. The external Norman features (the flat buttresses, the corbel-table and the square stone blocks) hide the fact that the church was rebuilt by William Smith, who died in 1436. There is also a Victorian east window and niches to left and right of the low panelled chancel arch. The tall west tower has diagonal buttresses, with buttress shafts and pinnacles in relief. Nave and tower are Perpendicular.
