Memories Of Lawmuir Agricultural College Jackton

A Memory of Eaglesham.

Hello ,just found this interesting website about lawmuir agricultural college which brought back many happy memories. I was a pupil there in 1954/55. Previously I attended Albert senior secondary school in springburn Glasgow I think I could have been one of the first conscript to lawmuir Anyway I remember getting on an old grey bus in George's square Glasgow every Monday morning and being taken to lawmuir where we would spend a week there (except when you were on weekend duty and didn't get home for two weeks) some of us liked it so much we would volunteer to do more weekends because as a treat you would be taken to hairmyres hospital to watch a film along with the nurses I can only remember the head teacher who was in charge. I am sure his name was mr Hutton (and he had a beautiful daughter who loved to go horse riding and all of us lads really had a crush on her but she never gave us the time of day I always remember that if you transgressed in any way there was a sadistic punishment handed out by mr Hutton. It was to dig the daisies out of the putting green in front of the big house and you had to get them out by the roots and fill the holes in with sand. This was always checked by mr Hutton and if he thought you were swinging the lead he made you do another hour at it
I think another teacher was called mr macindoe who was either the poultry or the gardening expert. Anyway some mornings you were on byre duty and had to be up around 5am to get the cows milked I always loved this the only problem I had was I liked the farm work but didn't like doing school lessons which we had to do every half day sometimes in the winter it was really hard work especially thinning turnips or worse stil cutting kale because you were always soaked to the skin but I still think back on these days with fondness
I never did go into farming,I served an apprenticeship in st rollox railway works then joined the merchant navy (no chance of milking cows on the high seas)
It was a pleasure for me to read some of articles written about lawmuir so I though I would note down a few of my experiences I don't expect there will be any of my old classmates still on the go as I am approaching 80 yrs but yu never know
So thank you for rekindling my love of
Lawmuir. To me it taught me how to appreciate the wildlife and to live a healthy life
So if anyone reads this I hope it bring back good memories of a fine institution
Regards David stevenson
