Happy Days

A Memory of Ealing.

I started at St.Anne's in the early 40's and was evacuated with some of the girls to Baccombe Warren, Wendover, as my father was in the war and my mother was looking after his business in Bond Street, Ealing. I remember Rosemary and Monica Hough (I think the spelling of their surname may not be correct) and our neighbour's daughter in Anthony Road off the A40, Pat Desmond, was also at Wendover. My mother had asked Sister Mary Rose if she would look after me. Then we came back to St. Anne's and I remember in the afternoons we were told to put our heads on our arms on the desk and try to sleep. After I left St. Anne's in 1948 I went to a boarding school in Reading and I hated it. I really missed Ealing and Sr. Stanislaus who kept in touch by letter for some time. I remember one of the girls in my class at St. Anne's was Gaynor Lett and I have looked her up on Ancestry.com but not been in touch. A few years ago I drove down to Wendover to look the school up and was sad to see the house, which belonged to the Tetley family, had been demolished and a modern house was there in its place - more is the pity. Sadly, Pat Desmond died some years ago - I was bridesmaid with Pat to her sister Eileen whilst at St. Anne's. I knew most of the shopkeepers in Bond Street and was allowed to go in to the Billiard Hall which was a male preserve and very smokey! I have so many happy memories of my childhood at St. Anne's and a warm feeling comes over me when I think back. When I find the school photo down at Baccombe Warren I will post it on this site.

Two names I remember from my short time at St. Annes, around '45,'46 are Elizabeth Wilson and Margaret Horsefield. Often wonder where they got to!
