In the past there was a bustling livestock market and three annual fairs; the town was then known as Market Harling. It was already famous for the manufacture of linen and cloth. Its character changed in 1845 on the arrival of the railway when the population could easily travel to other towns and villages. The High Street still has shops, banks and pubs. Petty Sessions were held in the Swan Hotel, and the public house on the right has been a popular watering-hole since the early 1800s.
