More about this scene
Ecclesfield lies 5 miles north of Sheffield. The village used to be in Derbyshire. Its industry was based on small engineering and the flour mill. The nearby priory was here from as early as 1267. Here we see the church of St Mary the Virgin, which dates from the 12th century (it was renovated in 1866); the font has been in use since 1662. Gas lighting reached the village in 1872, and electricity in the 1930s.
