The Esplanade-cum-parade ground was laid out in its present form in the 1820s. The part of the castle buildings on the left is the palace (reconstructed 1617); then comes the Half-Moon Battery and Forewall Battery. The small tower on the right with the angled roof is the Portcullis Gate; its upper part was added in the 1880s.
