In 1644, James Graham, 5th Earl of Montrose, raised an army to fight for King Charles I. Against all odds, Montrose gained victory after victory until his luck finally ran out at Philliphaugh in September 1645. Montrose escaped to the Continent, but returned to raise troops for Charles II. Betrayed to the Covenanters, he was hung, drawn and quartered at Edinburgh on 21 May 1650.
