More about this scene
The oldest parish church in Edinburgh, St Giles's was erected in the early 12th century on the site of an older building. In 1385, much of the church was badly damaged by fire, and the rebuilding was not completed until 1460. In 1634, Charles I attempted to re-establish the Scottish Episcopal Church, and St Giles's was for a short period elevated to the status of a cathedral. It became a cathedral again under Charles II, only to revert to being a parish church in 1688.
