More about this scene

A view of Fore Hill, an attractive street which continues from the High Street, descending to the River Ouse. Although the town itself is very much low-key compared to the impressive cathedral, it does have its place in folklore, with its association with Hereward the Wake; it is more firmly rooted in history through its connection with Oliver Cromwell, for a time Member of Parliament for Ely.

My husband was stationed at the RAF hospital and we lived in married quarters. I taught at the local  Primary School, St Audrey's. A friend worked in the little hardware shop on the left. I belonged to the CAT theatre group. We staged musicals in the secondary school. I still have friends living there in Chiefs Street and the Vineyards. We used to go to the Red White and Blue pub. Baron Of Beef
My Dad did his National Service at RAF Ely Hospital in 1953/4. We held a reunion at the weekend (27th Sept 08) in the Lamb Hotel which was attended by about 27 people. The Baron of Beef, the Rifleman's (on Lyn Road), the Cutter and the Minster were their favoured pubs. I would love to obtain photos from the 1950s especially of the Baron of Beef, which was at 13 Fore Hill. I understand its license was surrendered in 1958 ...see more

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
