More about this scene
Isabella Dorling wrote to her fiancé, Sam: 'I was invited to Mr White's to-morrow evening, so shall have to go through that terrible ordeal, a dinner party'. But luckily 'there was a good dance after dinner, which exactly suited me.' Sam was busy at his publisher's office in London and could not come. But the course of young love went smoothly; there was a wedding at St Martin's in 1856, with an epic reception at the grandstand afterwards, and Isabella became Mrs Beeton. Within five years she would be known to thousands as the author of the 'Book of Household Management'.
