Manor Road Erith 1946 1962

A Memory of Erith.

I lived with my mum and my two brothers and one sister at 7 Manor Road, Erith, which was on the junction with Crescent Road. There was an iron foundry opposite our house, which had a very tall new chimney put in when the clean air acts were passed. We called the Manager Ginger. Just Ginger. It seemed to be ok with him.
Is this bit of Manor Road, as I suspect, part of the new superstore now? Or does the old semi detached house still stand, does anyone know? Corys wharf was at the bottom of our garden. I remember when it was used for transporting coal, then at some point cars were stored then transported to ... I don't know where!
Does anyone remember Crescent Road primary school and the headteacher Mr Chinery who lived in Avenue Road? I certainly remember the Odeon - my brother went to Saturday morning pictures there whilst I had ballet lessons. Ballet classes with Miss Betty who emigrated to the States ... good memories ... then I went on to Sadlers Wells for classes.

Names I remember include Syvia Mott, her dad kept chickens further down Manor Road. And Robert Brown who I think lived in the Avenue. And a girl who was very very talented at knitting. I wasnt! I went on to Dartford Grammar School via the 480 bus. The stop was just around the corner from the Odeon, just past Mr Gilbert selling his newspapers. Another life indeed. My name then was Audrey Pointer.

Yep, I agree with all commentators - little Erith got ruined. Perhaps one day, somehow, someone will start to rebuild it all over again. Wouldn't that be good?

I went to Crescent Road School, but always thought of it as Manor Road. I will always remember Mr.Chinery, but he was deputy head then.
Hi Audrey I went to Crescent road school too. We lived in Manor Rd. Yes i remember Mr Chinery, he was welsh and smoked a pipe, all the girls were in love with him.
My family left Manor Rd in 1958 to come to Australia when i was 11. Years later i came back to Erith and ended up taking Len Blake who lived at 34 Manor Rd( his sister Maggie)back to Oz with me. This Xmas we have been married 40 Yr s and often think of scrumping at nappers orchard. I remember because i was the first girl with a zip up jacket and the boys filled my jacket with apples and then ran off when farmer napper came out with gun and dogs leaving me behind. mum knew where i had been because farmer napper felt sorry for me and gave me a bag of the apples to take home.
I went to Burtons to do ballroom dancing while my sister Shirley and brother David went to pictures.
Len and I spent xmas and new year 1971 at the Prince of Wales pub an amazing time. Have photo's of us at the new years party. There was a brother and sister(plus parents) in the photo who lived at Queens Rd, Brother was a merchant seaman and she was a hair dresser. can't remember their names now(Janet?, Robert??) but remember their house was on three floors and i used to go around there sometimes. If anyone remembers them would like the information please, would be nice to put names to the photo. The Prince of Wales i understand is now a McDonald's, sacrilege.
Len has had Parkinsons Disease for 16Yrs now but is still doing well and remembers a lot of what has been written here on this site, names, places etc. Keep the memories coming.

Hi Marilyn, just picked up on this site. Did you have long auburn hair and go to Bexley Tech after Crescent Road? If so, I remember you well!
