Nostalgic memories of Erith's local history

Share your own memories of Erith and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

My sister Wendy and I went to school at The Sacred Heart Convent on Erith Rd in the early '50s. I remember being taught by nuns in traditional nun's habits. But one teacher who wasn't a nun I remember because she was called Miss Suds and we used to call her Soap Suds. When we turned seven our parents, who were managers at the department store, Mitchells of Erith, on Pier Rd, inexplicably sent us away to boarding ...see more
I have just read Alan's memories of Erith. He told of working in a mans outfitters in Erith. Alan it was Clears !!!! And my mum (Joan Dixon) also worked there before she was married. My dad (Godfrey Rose) met her there. She told many stories of the shop and talked of Mr Goodbody. There was also an article of Saturday morning pictures. 6d and 9d seats, stink bombs!!! Stamping feet when things got exiting, Flash Gordon, 3d mix up across the road and 6d chips to eat on the way home.
I am now 53. My parents and I moved to Erith from Suffolk in 1967/68. I remember the old Erith pre concrete jungle. I never really let the old town go. The damage the new building did to the town is only known now. It was not a very happy time, but that was not due to Erith. I lived in Springhead Road. Worked 10 years at Simbros, Hailey Road. Got married in Christchurch, Erith. I would like to think my dad was a character ...see more
I moved into Erith in 1971 to the new riverside flats of Bosworth House. The town was then being constructed and I used to see it grow into the then first stage of the 'concrete jungle'. I used the Erith Trades club and enjoyed many nights in there. We then moved to our first house in Festival Close. They were happy days and we had really first class neighbours. I used to work for Jacobs Biscuits as a HGV Fitter ...see more
I used to work at the Midland Bank in the High Street which was next to the corner carpet shop. When I started there the Bank was just on one shop site but it later expanded to two shop sites. Mr Baker was the Manager who retired in my time there to Broadway in Worcestershire. On the opposite corner set back was Burton's, then Howells and Harrison's the chemist, then a shop that just sold foam upholstery. A little further ...see more
Born in 60 Alexandra Road in 1943, I went to Crescent Road [Headmistress Mrs Keeble], later to Northumberland Heath School. Walked right down Manor Road just last week round Crescent Road sad to see the school has gone. Such memories as the Ritz cinema in Pier Road, Mitchells store and Pooleys the cycle shop. Beans the butchers at the bottom of Pier Road. Friends of the family remembered are Susan Phillips, Ray Clarke ...see more
I lived on High Street from 1959 to 1962 as a child of US Air Force parents. We rented from the Rabies who owned a cute shop (lived upstairs) on High Street. I remember the river was behind our house and because we were almost the last house on the street, the locks were right there! I am planning a trip back to show my husband this adorable town....can anyone give my any updated information? Thank you ever so much, Suzanne..Washington DC
In 1957, my friends and I used to go to the open cinema on Sunday afternoons, Pauline Martin, Grace Grant and Renda Tyler. After the film we went to the Diploma Cafe up Pier Road, had hot chocolate and a snack. Then we used to go to Burton's basement club, nearly all rock and roll music. Made more friends, wonder where they all are now. It was run by Henry Kingston, was a really good atmosphere. Remember the old shops in Erith, where have the years gone?! Anyone else remember Burtons?
Crescent Road Primary School ... more names flooding back today! Pauline McNutt, Judith Ward, David.....woops surname just slipped out of my head again, or should I say back in?! A Brian with fair curly hair. A girl who had impetigo badly? Pauline was dark haired and very tall. Judith was fair and very very pretty. Her sandwiches were always packed nicely not just in brown paper - we used to have to take sandwiches for after ...see more
I lived with my mum and my two brothers and one sister at 7 Manor Road, Erith, which was on the junction with Crescent Road. There was an iron foundry opposite our house, which had a very tall new chimney put in when the clean air acts were passed. We called the Manager Ginger. Just Ginger. It seemed to be ok with him. Is this bit of Manor Road, as I suspect, part of the new superstore now? Or does the old ...see more
