Sacred Heart Convent. Erith

A Memory of Erith.

I also went to the Convent in Erith Rd. I started at age 11 in 1956 and left 1961. Madam Pious was headmistress and very strict. When she blew her whistle if you had a chance you went in the other direction... happy days though. Most of the nuns were lovely. I remember one special one called Sister Theresa, she was a very special lady. Lady Mcdonald was the arts teacher and Miss Moth taught Spanish. Trouble was we could not understand her English! They were good days, although you don't always think so at the time. It was the Boater hats that did it.

I went to that too, I remember Madame Pius very well and Madame Finbarr. Sister Theresa was lovely. We had to curtsey to the nuns and bow our head every time we said Jesus. I loved the uniform especially the summer one. I was a sacristy girl with Margaret Huxham. I'm Lizzie Riley (Elizabeth Manning) from 1958 to 1961. I thought Miss Moth taught Maths or English, we just used to call the Spanish teacher Senora and did we play her up. Madame Finbarr was our form teacher, she used to walk up the aisle and flick the legs of the girls on the outside with a ruler as she walked past. One day some brave soul asked why she did that the reply was in case you misbehave. Just imagine how that would go down now!! Happy days indeed.
Hi. Sandra.
Do you happen to remember a girl called Barbra Day.
Her Dad was manager of the men’s wear Dept of the Coop store in Bexleyheath.
She was my first Girlfriend, she married and live in Upper Belvedere.
If so , please contact me.
