More about this scene
In olden days a beacon fire was lit on the headland to alert the countryside to threats of raids and possible invasion. The terrace, begun in 1791, became the place to live for those wealthier members of Georgian society who had settled in Exmouth, including Lady Nelson, the estranged wife of the hero of Trafalgar, and Lady Byron, the abandoned spouse of the famous poet.
