More about this scene

The wall was designed to deflect the waves that so often come up the English Channel from the south-west on stormy days. This scene has changed little in fifty years, though now a shelter from the wind stands on the position of the nearest bench in the photograph. It was donated by local resident William Frederick Stokes in 1964.

London Evacuee
June 1940 our primary school The London Oratory was evacuated en masse to Exmouth. I remember arriving at the railway station when we were all put on a coach and went to the Pavilion on the sea front. We then lined up on the stage and local people chose who they would take in to their house. More memories to follow. Maureen Hall (maiden name O Reilly)

Imperial Hotel
Worked there in 1970 including night of the terrible fire!

Exmouth To Starcross Ferry
My great great Granddad started the Exmouth to Starcross steam ferry in the 1880's - His name was Freddy Gronberg! My name is Janet Peniston - my Mother's maiden name was Eva Gisela Gronberg!

Pencarwick Nursing Home
I was born in Pencarwick Nursing Home Exmouth on 7 December 1940. The Principal was Mrs M.E.Hodges My mother left London sometime beforehand with my two elder brothers aged 2 and 6. She left London to avoid the bombing. I understand my mother lived at 2 Marpool Grove. I was christened in All Saint Church on 18 January 1941. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
