Happy Days
A Memory of Filton.
I lived in Stanley Avenue off Filton Avenue and went to Shields Road Primary School before transferring to Thornbury Grammar in 1955. I remember going to the Cabot cinema for the ABC Minors and coming home via the playing fields near Shield Road School. I cycled safely everywhere especially out to the BAC where my dad worked, to watch planes coming in to land over the A38.
We would play out in the street and back lanes till it was dark and if the occasional car came down our road while we were playing, it would slow down and wait till we kids moved.

I met my husband at Thornbury and he lived in Ferndale Road near to Filton Clinic next to Shield Road School. Whilst I was at Shield Road I had to attend the Clinic for my injections etc and to see the School Dentist!!
Yes I remember when Filton was still a village and I attended St Peter's Church as a brownie and then a guide before the church was extended, The verger ran a cafe in a corrugated iron hut opposite the church.
There was no dual carriageway in those days and therefore Filton was not divided. The playing field was safe and every year the Fair used to come to Filton - it was the treat of the year!
I too went to the Cabot Cinema on a Saturday morning at the cost of sixpence where old cowboy films and cartoons were shown.
Fond and happy memories.

I certainly remember the fair visiting the playing field and hunting for coins when it had gone.
A boy in my class climbed the tall tree at the start of the "hedges" the path that led to Shield Rd, then he couldn't get down. Great excitement when the Fire Brigade turned up!
