More about this scene

Some thousand yards from the headland, Beacon Tower was a lookout built in 1674 by Sir John Clayton. Fires were used to guide ships, although voluntary dues from sailors were never sufficient to improve the facility. It was later used as a telegraph station between 1840 and 1900. Flamborough's new lighthouse was constructed 400 yards from this tower in 1806. Its height is 85ft, it has 120 steps, and is 250ft above sea level on the cliffs. Its light can be seen as far inland as Driffield, 20 miles away.

There was a fisherman's shack on Donkey Lane, where we could get some freshly boiled crabs legs to eat on the way to school. Later, in the early '50s we lived on Flamborough ...see more
