More about this scene

At one time Gayle overshadowed its neighbour, Hawes, half a mile away. But then the turnpike road was built, and Gayle lost its eminence. Village working life was dominated by mining and the mill, now restored; it stands next to the Wensleydale creamery, famous for its cheese. This road leads to Bainbridge. We see (centre) Force Head Farm (1711), and on the right the steps remain outside the bonny baby's house, which is dated 1695. Wensleydale
