Preparatory Schools
A Memory of Gerrards Cross.
In March 1940 we came to live in Gerrards Cross. The school which my parents chose for me was called "Oakend". in Orchehill Avenue, I think. Two ladies, Miss Hitchcock and Miss Salmon, owned the school and taught us, with the help of a younger Assistant teacher.
One abiding memory is of the gravel covered play area, and the consequent grazed knees !
We went to a shared playing field for team games : I remember thinking that I was playing cricket quite well. My father disillusioned me on telling me that it was not good to have "stayed in" without scoring any runs !
I was jealous of the pupils at the adjoining school at Maltmans Green, as they were free to attend lessons or not. This principle was fashionable in certain circles at the time.

Did you still have to lie on a rug to rest, silently, after lunch? In that time I learnt the "deaf and dumb" language as it was then called !
I was very happy at school, I remember having to rest on rugs after lunch and a teacher would read us a story. The swing and climbing frame in the playground were fun and huge ice slides in the winter. I remember Mrs Parnell, Mrs Morgan who had a red Bubble car, Mrs Goodwin, Mrs braid, Mrs Eldridge.
I was in George House.
