Hugh Mc Laren

A Memory of Glenboig.

Hugh was born and bred in Glenboig; he was the son of John and Mary (Starrs).
In 1941 he joined the army and on 1 May 1945, seven days before VE day he was killed in action inPotrau, Northern Germany, in what was probably the last infantry battle of WW2. He left a wife, Hazel, and three very young daughters including twins.

I have no knowledge of the events that followed except to say that Hazel had very little support in he years that followed and she married again in 1950....a Farmer who was almost twice her age....I am pleased to say that she and her kids found happiness in their new surroundings.

Hugh is remembered on the War Memorial at Glenboig and at the Military Cemetery at Hamburg.

In May 1965, Hugh's eldest daughter, Margaret, and I married and went on to enjoy our lives together. Margaret's sisters also married and prospered!

When Hazel died, about 10 years ago, I was appointed to administer her affairs and have many letters and documents including letters from her Glenboig family from who she became detached....a farmer's wife and mother to five young children can be extremely busy!

VE Day in 2020 seemed like a good time to revive Hugh's memory.. Norman Patton.
