More about this scene
This photograph proves that the people of Gloucester enjoyed the waterways of the city in the earlier part of the 20th century. We can see a steam launch and the cabin of a pleasure boat builder on the left of the bridge. The old Foreign bridge used to be close by: here, revenues were collected by St Nicholas church, and later, in 1229, by St Bartholomew's. Locals refer to 'the Island' by the bridge at Westgate. In fact, it has not been an island for many years, but local terminology for places is not easily changed.
