More about this scene
Racing on the Downs was started in 1802 by the Duke of Richmond and Gordon, and the course remains largely unchanged. This beautiful course with its spectacular views across the Downs to the sea, nicknamed 'Glorious Goodwood', soon became established; from 1814 the five-day meeting every July has been a key event in the English social calendar. In this view the new grandstand, designed by a Surrey architect, J A Henderson, is in its first season of use.
