Holidays In Grainthorpe

A Memory of Grainthorpe.

Many holidays were spent by me and my brother in Grainthorpe during the 50's and 60's with my grandparents. They lived in Buttgate, Ben and Bertha Barfield and my auntie, Winnie Barfield. Many happy memories, walking to Soubys for a bottle of dandelion and burdock, there was a little fish shop next to my grandparents house, right on the roadside. An outside toilet and the well in the garden, the well ran constantly and before they had tap water we used it for washing, drinking, everything. It was orange from the iron it had in it, we can't ever have been deficient in iron!
My aunt eventually sold the house after my grandparents had both died and went to live in a bungalow in Carters Garth, she has now died. The house has been modernised and changed a little but of course people don't want to live without bathrooms and inside toilets now a days! I have no ties with Grainthorpe except for the church yard where many of my relatives reside! I still visit from time to time to check on some of the graves and enjoy the memories of Buttgate.
