Raf North Coates

A Memory of Grainthorpe.

I remember first arriving at North Thorseby Station and being transported to the RAF Station, where I was stationed between 1949 and 1951. I ran the Station post office and was also the chief projectionist at the Station Cinema. I have fond memories of North Coates, the many trips into Grimsby (and Cleethorpes) and not forgetting Marshchapel, Tetney and the pub on the corner (forget its name). I recall the numerous times returning from leave and arriving at North Thorseby at some ridiculous early time in the morning, usually half asleep, and getting back to camp just in time to start duty. I spent almost two years there, loved the area and still do. I still visit occasionally, but it is sad to see what was the former camp now sold off to various new owners. I dont expect there are now too many people, service or civilian, still around who were stationed or otherwise lived there at the time. But if there are, and they see this, please respond.

I was stationed at RAF North Coates from 1950 to 1952, and worked in the Officers Mess Bar as senior Barman. I may probably have met you either at the cinema or Post Office, though most of my mail was delivered to the Officers Mess, as I had my own room in a disused officers billet.
