When I Was A Wolf Cub In Grays

A Memory of Grays.

In the early 1950's we lived in "Little Thurrock" as my Mum called it!
Actually in Blackshotts Lane at a time before the road was adopted by the council and full of pot holes!
What I want to find is exactly where the Third Grays Wolf Cubs HQ was?
Remember it cost tuppence to get a return bus ticket from Blackshotts Lane to Grays Town.
Walked over the train line level crossing in the town centre towards the river and then turned left but which turn left? Walked up an incline and passed a chip shop on the left and up to a church on the right hand side. Along a small narrow track beside the church and the Scout HQ was in grounds at the back of the church. A tin hall painted red with a coal fired "tortoise" stove for heating.
Chips at tuppence a bag on the way home and tuppence subs to the Cubs.
As a Scout the Church Parade March once a month where I played a bugle! (badly)
Secondary school life was at Torells 1953 to 1957.
Each week a coach ride to the Exmouth Swimming Pool down by the Thames.
Around 1956 the whole school board the Tilbury ferry boat Edith for a trip up the Thames to the Tower of London - the things you remember!
O yes, got stuck down a deanhole with a pal and rescued by the fire brigade.
Also remember some large chalk caves full of bats!
As a 14 year old spent many hours with pals on Tilbury Marshes and often had a slow worm or lizard in a pocket.
On one occasion we found the remains of an incendiary bomb complete with a swastika engraved on the tail fin. This was was put into the saddlebag of my bike and we cycled like mad to the Police Station in Grays.
The "bomb" we proudly place on the station desk causing some panic and the evacuation of the Police Station.
One of many "ticking offs" during a very enjoyable Essex childhood.

I lived in Parkside near the Deneholes woods (or Hangmans woods) during the 50s and 60s, the Woods used to be our favourite place. A friend fell down one of the Deneholes and had to be rescued by the fire brigade, did we all get in trouble! Used to shop in Joys for material, my gran made all our clothes, and we'd have days out at Grays beach. Would visit my friend's gran in the old two up two downs, loved playing in the back alleys, can't remember the name of the streets though. I'm sure it's all very different now.
I remember a scout hall on London rd going towards the bus stops for West Thurrock and aveley
Would that have been the Methodist Church the home of 8th Grays Cub s and Scouts?
If you have not had the information yet, 3rd Grays Cubs met in the Scout hut behind the church hall in New Road, about 100 yards up from the Regal Cinema. I know it very well as I was a member of
3rd Grays Cubs in 1946/7. Went back to Grays for a visit in 1997 ( I havelived in New zealand since 1978) and got lost! The Grays I knew has gone. I will never go back.
