We are close to Blackpool and Garstang. The old road curved through Little and Great Eccleston, but the by-pass of 1940 split these two villages. In 1823 William Bennet renewed his licence for the White Bull (right). He had to promise 'not to suffer any bear, bull or badger baiting, cock fighting nor permit any drinking or tippling during the hours of Divine Service'. Facing the White Bull was the Black Bull Inn. The Gala-Queen crowning is held annually here in the Square. Mentioned in Domesday Book, 'Eglestun' had a rush-bearing ceremony and a rush-light making industry. To celebrate Queen Victoria's coronation in 1837, all children were given oat cakes and beer. Celebrations nowadays merit no beer, but home-made ice-cream can be bought from the Willow Café, where two boys stand.
