Hackbridge And Its Schools 1950`s

A Memory of Hackbridge.

I attended Hackbridge Kindergarten then Primary and later Elmwood High schools

Left school at 14 , worked at Croydon Airport as a apprentice engineer for Mortons .
I cant say I have good memories of Hackbridge Wallington Surrey ,

I didn't like school ,it didn't like me .

I was born in Senga Rd ,then spent a few years away in a orphanage in Burchington .

I do remember lots of these photos from the area and often scan Google Earth to see the changes to my Hunting Grounds .
The Wandle ,Beddington Park ,The Manor (since burnt down ) ,I used to stay at the Manor with a mate who's family were caretakers .
Yes it was haunted ,I can vouch for that .

I also remember riding my bike to work and trying to get home in the Smog ,in the dark .

My Dad drove a London red bus and he also had the same problem ,walking home from his bus stop at the end of Culvers Avenue (it ran at the back of our house garden)

When both of my brothers left for Australia in the mid 50`s ,I also left the UK after a few years, leaving in late 1959.
Never been back ...............

Christmas on a big boat ,wow I soon grew up .

Culvers Avenue used by workers going to Mullards and backed on to the rec where we spent hours honing our football skills.
Hackbridge Primary in the late 50's - head Mr Earle, felt his long swishing cane. Good teachers though - Mr Mason, Mr Caulfield - set me up well with 4 others to go on to Wallington Grammar.
Is the old primary school still there? I attended in the 50s. Lived in army flats by the green and opposite what I think was the Zetters factory,it did football pools. There were fields and a couple of old. Nissan huts by the river Wandle on the site, and we used to be out all day just playing and paddling in the river and exploring. I was only 5 or 6. Wouldn't happen now! It was a very free childhood and I was always climbing trees. I went back some years ago and the flats were being pulled down and all the fields had been built over. It was very sad. Would like to know if the school is still standing and in use as would like to go back and read from my children's book and tell them how it was.
These comments jogged my memories of childhood times in Hackbridge, the Primary School,Elmwood SM from 1947 to1953.School captain of the cricket & football teams, played for the district representative team.Enjoyed Clem Wilson’s training as our sports master (he was my idle). That cane used by Mr Stacey nearly broke a mate’s fingers and left my hand bruised for weeks.Anyone still surviving, please do get in touch My brothers Bill& Fred lived at #6 Senga Road Hackbridge.,Regards John Witney
Oh wow! Just came across your message by chance, looking for the Elmwood school.
I remember Fred, we knew him as Freddie Witney, and I had a huge crush on him. I think I would have been in the 2nd year, with my twin sister Jill. We were known as the Brammer twins then. Mum had remarried and we had to change our surname to our new step father's.
I hope Fred is keeping well. My twin passed away 2 years ago. I've been round the world and back, now up here north of Liverpool.
Do take care, I really couldn't believe my eyes when I saw you name on here!
best regards Janet
Hi John,
I was answering Fred's email, but it simply disappeared. I'm unable to get it back! .. .. ??
I thought it was on private bit as opposed to public; so I will have another try

I am the third of the Witney Brothers the middle one, my memory of Hackbridge and Elmwood schools is much the same as Fred & John’s. I did not wish to do GCEs so left school at 15yrs in 1955 in year 4A coming 2nd in final year exam to Nina Woodhall, I wonder if Nina is still in UK? I was always interested in aircraft so went to Croydon Airport & obtained a job as a Trainee Engineer with Morton’s a very interesting job much better than school. My highlight was going up on a test flight looking down on local area like our home in Hackbridge and Elmwood. In 1958 due to Croydon closing & Morton’s moving to Gatwick I decided to join my older brother in Australia. Obtained a job in Sydney with a local airline finished my training & became a Licensed Eng. Meet my wife 60yrs ago at Bondi Beach she was a London lady we are still together, our oldest daughter went to UK to finish nursing training & married an English man living close to Gatwick Airport which we have had good reason to visit her and our many other British relatives. No Regrets.
