More about this scene
But for its battlements, the tower would hardly clear the roof of St Wilfrid's Church. One of the county's earliest churches, it was founded in the 7th century and has several Saxon crosses, one carved with both pagan and Christian symbols. It seems the building occupied an even older sacred site, for a Roman altar was unearthed there in 1794.
