The Early Days Of West End School Harrogate

A Memory of Harrogate.

i started school in 1942 when I was 4 years old, and the school was then in one of the large terraced houses in West End Avenue, run by the two"Miss Tait"sisters. I remember having to go into some kind of large van which was parked in the lane behind the houses, with our gas masks on,presumably to test them. It was later, though I'm not sure of the date, Mrs Gray took over the school and the school was moved to a large detached Victorian house which was nearer to the Oval, long before its eventual and final move. We had in those days royal blue uniforms with flat berrai style hats with white tassels which were exchanged for Panama ones in Summer. I passed the Scholarship exam and left West End School in July 1949 and in September started at King James Grammar School Knaresborough.
All,for me, happy memories!
