Hastings, The Pier 1890

More about this scene
After 18th-century false starts, Hastings grew in the 19th century; Pelham Crescent in Regency stucco of the 1820s was the first major development. Hastings acquired a pier in 1872, which picked up the theme of the Mystic East with onion-domed kiosks and a kind of sultan's palace at the end of the pier. Unfortunately this fine pier has been much built on since, not to its architectural advantage. Francis Frith's Sussex A Century Ago
