Standard Public House

A Memory of Haverhill.

I moved here with my parents and brother back in 1969, my parents John & Joan were the first publicans in the new Standard Public House on the Parkway, we moved from Cambridge into this new and exciting phase of our lives, hardly a car parked anywhere along Queensway, doors were left unlocked and the norm was for us children to play outside all day, climbing trees and all that jazz, happy days. Both my parents were blessed with some fantastic customers who became good friends too many too mention here but great people and great days, unfortunatley ill health made them give up the reigns in the middle eighties and by 2000 the pub had been demolished to make way for the new, both of my parents have passed on but I still live in Haverhill and my roots are well and truly planted here, if anyone has any photographs from the Standard days please do put them up it would be great too see them.....

Hello, I just signed up on here and saw your memory about The Standard. I remember both your mom and dad very well and feel like I grew up as a teenager in the pub. My name is Tina Cogan and I'm sure you knew my brother's Christopher and Darren (Noggin) Cogan, They used to play poole for the pub and darts I think. I live in DC now but visit my family every year. I was disappointed to see the Standard gone, thought it was a part of history!!
Hi Tina, I had forgotten that I posted this as it has been some time, wow living in DC when did you move? I do on occasions speak with Chris on Facebook and I thank you for sharing your memories regarding the pub and my parents, yes shame about the old pub as it was only a little over thirty years old when it was demolished which seems a great waste, especially when the Scarlett Pimpernel Is still standing which is of a similar age albeit boarded up. Anyways great too hear from you and I am glad so many people had many good times in the pub, take care and all the best..... Darren
