More about this scene
The bustling village of Hawes is the 'capital' of Upper Wensleydale, and the economic and social centre for the farmers of the dale. This view of market day shows Hawes's main street packed with visitors, farmers and their wives. Hawes is famous for its Wensleydale cheese; thanks to a successful local campaign to keep it open, Hawes still has an active dairy producing the crumbly delicacy.
