This leafy approach to the village of Hermitage remains much the same today as it was in the 1950s. This is rural Berkshire at its best, a mixture of dense woodland and winding country lanes. Several substantial new houses have been built on the left of the road in recent years.

Concerning the photo H335025 of a wood in the Hermitage area with the caption "The Aisles c1960", does anyone recognize the name "The Aisles" and where exactly it is (or was)? I would expect the name of the location to remain long after the trees had all been felled.

I was living in the house to the right in this photo (outbuildings just seen) when it must have been taken. Some good memories, some painful, but memories come flooding back...!
We lived at 101 Oare Common.
Our family lived at the above address from 1937 until 1949. I started to attend Hermitage Primary School in 1938 and left there in 1948, during that time we had three headmasters, Mr Cudby, Mr Friend, and Mr Enever, two teachers that I remember were Miss Bushell and Miss Matthews. Delighted to find this photo. I was born in Grimsbury Castle in 1946. I came to America at age three and know very little about the history of the Castle and surrounding area. I did visit the Castle in 1971. The appearance was much the same as it is in your 1955 photo. There were in fact adders close by even then.
