Highbridge, River Brue 1903

More about this scene
South of the town, beyond the stock market, the Bridgwater Road crosses the River Brue, here canalised. The Brue drains a major section of the Somerset Levels to Glastonbury and beyond; the Victorian sluices in the distance are a vital part of maintaining water levels and preventing flooding of the low-lying countryside. The cottages along the bank date from 1877 onwards, with two further pairs added in 1909 in the middle distance gap.
